Sheffield United star wants Premier League move amid European interest

Sheffield United star Gustavo Hamer wants to move to the Premier League amid interest from PSV Eindhoven, as per SoccerNews.

Sheffield United are widely expected to lose some key assets after their failure to win promotion. Many stayed with SUFC after their relegation, but now seem destined for pastures new.

It sets new boss Ruben Selles up for a difficult summer, as his squad needs significant work to ensure the Blades are ready to go in another push for promotion to the Premier League.

Among those widely expected to move back to a higher level is midfielder Gustavo Hamer, who was among the most important players for Chris Wilder’s side once again last season.

Plenty of clubs have been linked with the 28-year-old and reports have claimed he could find a Sheffield United escape route with PSV Eindhoven. However, as per Dutch news outlet SoccerNews, such a move is not favoured by Hamer.

The SUFC ace has eyes on a move back to a higher level this summer, but he wants to move to the Premier League.

Hamer is not completely dismissing the possibility of returning to the Netherlands and a move to PSV, who have Champions League football, could be an option. But, at this moment in time, his desire to play in the Premier League is stronger.

Deserving of a move back to a higher level

Hamer proved once again that he is a player above Championship level in the 2024/25 season.

A wealth of midfield options at Sheffield United and a gap on the left-hand side saw the Brazilian-born ace fill in as a makeshift winger, though he regularly came inside to influence the play centrally. His adaptation to such a move further highlighted just how well-rounded his game in, and his smarts were accentuated by the ability to adapt to such a role with ease.

He notched 10 goals and eight assists in 46 games for SUFC last season. Overall, he has 15 goals and 16 assists for the club run 84 outings and now deserves to be playing at a far higher level.

A big gap for Sheffield United to fill

Losing Hamer feels like an inevitability for Sheffield United this summer, but that doesn’t make the task of replacing him any easier.

If they are wise, the recruitment team at Bramall Lane will already have a string of players in mind to try and replace him. Some will argue to truly replace the influence he has, more than one player will be needed.

The funds from a sale should be more than enough to fund such business, though it remains to be seen just where Hamer goes with a step up surely awaiting.
