Jurgen Klopp has taken to Instagram to pen an emotional letter honouring Diogo Jota.

Liverpool’s story has been moments of dazzling triumph but also moments of raw, communal grief.

Thursday morning’s tragic death of Diogo Jota and his younger brother André in a late-night motorway crash on Spain’s A-52 has plunged the red half of Merseyside – and indeed football fans worldwide – into one of those darker chapters.

The German brought Jota to the club in 2020 for £45 million and was always a big fan of the striker.

In 182 appearances Jota scored 65 goals and assisted 22 – numbers that only scratch the surface of his knack for delivering clutch moments when the Reds needed them most.

Now taking to social media, the former Liverpool boss wrote:

“This is a moment where I struggle! There must be a bigger purpose!”

“But I can’t see it!” Klopp lamented.

“I’m heartbroken to hear about the passing of Diogo and his brother André.”

“Diogo was not only a fantastic player, but also a great friend, a loving and caring husband and father!”

“We will miss you so much!”

“All my prayers, thoughts and power to Rute, the kids, the family, the friends and everyone who loved them!”

“Rest in peace – Love J”

In honour of Diogo Jota, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has formally requested that UEFA hold a minute’s silence ahead of Portugal’s Women’s Euro 2025 opener against Spain in Bern this Thursday evening, according to the BBC.

This tribute will extend beyond just the Group B clash, with all Women’s Euro matches on Thursday and Friday set to begin with the same act of remembrance.

Portugal’s women’s squad will also wear black armbands during the match as a mark of respect for Jota and his brother.
