Former Manchester United winger Angel Di Maria has taken to Instagram to thank the club, and all of his other former clubs, as he prepares for a move back to Argentina.
The 38-year-old officially left Benfica at the end of last month, and is returning to boyhood club Rosario Central. It brings an end to his time in Europe, where he represented five clubs, including United.
Di Maria spent one season at Old Trafford, playing 32 times, scoring four goals and providing 11 assists. He completed a move to French side Paris Saint Germain after just 12 months at the club. He has also represented Benfica on two occasions as well as Real Madrid, and Juventus.
Just a few months after moving away, he opened up about ‘problems’ during his time at United. “I started very well,” Di Maria said in an interview with Marca. “Then I had problems with people in the club, I started going to the bench, this happens in football.
“After the robbery at my house, everything made me want to leave there quickly.”
It’s not the only time he has looked back on his time at the club in not such a good light. But he now appears to have completed a U-turn.
In a statement released on his Instagram page, translated to English, he said: “Today it’s time to return home, my Europe career is over. Many years passed, many clubs passed, I’m leaving complete with so many unforgettable lived experiences.
“It was 18 years in Europe, where I not only enjoyed living in beautiful cities, if not huge clubs, many wonderful people, I was filled with friends that I will carry forever in my heart, each and every one of the amazing moments I lived made it what I am today. Also getting hit, crying, getting angry, getting up and moving forward was part of my football training and growth and as a person without a doubt.
“I will not get tired of thanking every club where I was for all that they did for me, Benfica, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Paris Saint Germain and Juventus, for helping me grow as a player and as a person, in every club I was lucky to find good teammates and people from staff (cooks, utilities, physicians, doctors, and all those people that no one sees or knows and work tirelessly to help us) I will never forget you.
“In 2007 I arrived very young, with my parents and sisters, with fears, uncertainties, but little by little I grew, matured and today I find myself surrounded by the love of them plus that of my wife and my daughters.
“Thank you very much Portugal, Spain, England, France and Italy for opening the doors of your country to me.
“So long, Angel.”
The post was ‘liked’ by current United defender Matthijs de Ligt and former United full-back Alvaro Fernandez. The latter also responded in the comments section with a message that translates as “The best.” with a heart eye emoji.
