Former Pistons guard agrees to one-year deal with Hornets

Former Detroit Pistons guard Spencer Dinwiddie is reportedly joining his sixth NBA team, agreeing to a one-year deal with the Charlotte Hornets in free agency.

The former Pistons second-round draft pick in 2014 out of Colorado just wrapped up his second stint with the Dallas Mavericks and will return to the Eastern Conference with the Hornets.

Dinwiddie, 32, had a solid campaign for the Mavericks in 2024-25, playing in 79 games with 30 starts while averaging 11 points and 4.4 assists after signing as an emergency point-guard option in August.

Joining a young Charlotte backcourt, Dinwiddie represents a reliable scorer who can provide veteran leadership behind LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller.

The Pistons had Dinwiddie for just two years after selecting him with the 38th overall pick in 2014. He played in 46 games and made one start, posting 4.4 points and 2.7 assists per game, while averaging about 13 minutes of game time.

Dinwiddie would be traded to the Chicago Bulls in 2016 and spent some time with their D-League affiliate before being signed by the Brooklyn Nets.

There, Dinwiddie began finding his way in the NBA, locking down a more consistent role and spending the next five seasons on their roster.

Stops with the Washington Wizards, Mavericks, another stint with the Nets and the Los Angeles Lakers followed for the Los Angeles native.

He’ll join another former Piston in center Mason Plumlee, who also agreed to a one-year deal with Charlotte during NBA free agency.
