Detroit Pistons’ Malik Beasley, who is the target of an FBI sports gambling probe, has been dealing with more than $8 million in financial problems, the Detroit News reports.

The problems include being sued twice by his Detroit landlord and having a portion of his Pistons paycheck seized, public records show, according to reporter Robert Snell of the Detroit News. He adds:

Court records obtained by The Detroit News paint a picture of a turbulent personal life, as Beasley experienced a career breakthrough with the Pistons last season while debts mounted from a celebrity barber, a dentist, a landlord, a lender, and a marketing firm.

Beasley, who helped the Pistons make the playoffs this year, played under a one-year, $6 million contract. The Pistons were reportedly offering him a three-year, $42 million contract, but that offer is now off the table. If the allegations are true, they would represent one of the worst breaches of trust a player can commit in the sport.

If proven, the allegations—which essentially amount to a form of game-fixing—could mark the end of Beasley's NBA career.

According to ESPN:

At least one prominent U.S. sportsbook detected unusually heavy betting interest on Beasley’s statistics beginning around January 2024, a gambling industry source told ESPN’s David Purdum.

One notable example was a game between the Bucks and the Portland Trail Blazers on Jan. 31, 2024. The odds on Beasley recording fewer than 2.5 rebounds moved dramatically at sportsbooks before the game, shifting from around +120 to -250 due to a surge in bets on the under. Beasley finished with six rebounds, and the unusual bets lost.
