Harvey Elliott has shared his shock at the death of Diogo Jota as he paid tribute to his Liverpool team-mate. The 28-year-old was killed in a car accident, alongside his brother Andre Silva, when travelling in the Zamora region of Sanabria.
It is understood the vehicle suffered a tyre blowout when heading towards Benavente, with Zamora News reporting that emergency services were called to the scene shortly before 1am on Thursday morning.
According to the Zamora provincial council, firefighters attended the scene on the A52, known as the Palacios de Sanabria, after the vehicle caught fire. Police said the accident happened at 12.30am when the Lamborghini the pair were travelling in veered off the road.
Liverpool released an official statement on Thursday morning (July 3) confirming the Portuguese’s death, with tributes continuing to flood in for the forward following his tragic passing.
Stefan Bajcetic was the first Reds star to react publicly to the shock news, with Darwin Nunez then also taking to social media to pay tribute to his team-mate.
Harvey Elliott has now joined the tributes to Jota after posting a heartfelt tribute on his Instagram story.
Posting a picture of him celebrating a goal with the Portuguese, the 22-year-old wrote: "Diogo, I can't believe you're gone. It's hard to put into words how much this hurts us.
"You were an incredible footballer, the kind that made a difference every single time you stepped on the field.
"You were humble, hardworking, kind and always there for anyone that needed anything.
"I feel so lucky to have shared the pitch with you, shared memories and moments I'll carry with me forever.
"You'll always be part of this team, part of the Liverpool family. We will never, ever forget you.
"My heart goes out to your whole family. Love you brother. Rest easy Diogo & Andre. You'll Never Walk Alone."
