The Patriots may have traded away the future of the franchise.
When the New England Patriots traded Joe Milton III to the Dallas Cowboys for a fifth-round draft pick, the team did not know they would be giving away the man who may replace Dak Prescott.
Last season, Prescott underwent hamstring surgery that forced him to miss eight games and led to the rise of Cooper Rush. Since the Patriots traded Milton to the Cowboys, NFL experts and fans are watching closely to see if history will repeat itself.
Since the trade became official in April, the Cowboys have been involved in NFL trade rumors across the league. But the trade talks really caught fire after Milton outperformed Prescott during the first public OTA of the season. Ric Butler of RockyTopInsider described Milton’s performance as “an experience” and a “rollercoaster of highs and lows” that has the NFL talking.

How Long Will Joe Milton Have to Wait to Play in Dallas?
Now, Milton is “waiting in the wings” to replace Cowboys QB Dak Prescott, while others are vocal about giving him a chance. Prescott expressed his support and stated that he just wants to win a Super Bowl. Milton also seems excited to play with Dak and described him as a “great person.”
Unfortunately, there can be only one starting quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys. Joe Milton is adamant about winning the position, and Prescott is coming off a significant hamstring injury. Despite all his success, the Cowboys could be looking to replace Dak because even before this latest injury, Prescott’s leadership and talent have not led to playoff success for the franchise.
Alex Kay of Bleacher Report listed the Cowboys as one of the NFL teams he expects will be the most aggressive sellers at this year’s trade deadline. If Dak Prescott is already on thin ice due to his injury and lack of deep playoff runs, a poor 2025 NFL season could spell the end for Dak in Dallas. Honestly, another unfortunate injury could end Prescott’s playing career altogether.
“With Prescott heading into his age-32 season and coming off a hamstring injury that could lead to further regression, the Cowboys could be farther from a championship than ever,” Alex Kay predicts. “Given how desperate ownership is to make it back to the biggest stage…it may not be long before the Cowboys elect to initiate a roster overhaul.”

Will the Patriots Regret Keeping Drake Maye Over Joe Milton?
According to Conor Ryan of Boston.com, the Patriots traded away Milton because he was vocal about competing with Drake Maye for the starting quarterback role in New England. Milton was also labeled a “locker room problem” by the Patriots. If Drake Maye has a sophomore slump and Milton takes over for Prescott in Dallas, the Patriots will have made a spectacular mistake.
Following Milton’s “wild” OTA performance, the Patriots and head coach Mike Vrabel must be kicking themselves for letting a potential starting quarterback go. The team has been trying to replace Tom Brady for five years now. If the Patriots just gave away their franchise quarterback to the Cowboys for a fifth-round pick, that would be one of the all-time mistakes in NFL history.
