Revealed: The real reason why Max Wober is leaving Leeds United

The summer kicked off at Leeds United in a surprising way. The first week of the transfer window was filled with speculation about who the club wanted to sell.

Illan Meslier was one of the first names mentioned, with reports that he had been offered to other clubs in an attempt to move him. Leeds then decided that the trio of Sam Greenwood, Darko Gyabi and Joe Gelhardt would be available for sale. The former Leeds U21 stars have failed to break into the first team, and the club believe their sales can generate some profit.

The Austrian international missed most of the season due to injury, and even when he returned he barely played from January. When Wober played for Austria during the international break, it was his first meaningful minutes in months. After the game he shocked everyone by revealing Leeds’ plans for him:

“Leeds has already made it clear to me that they want to sell me,” he said,

“…It was simply a good feeling to be back on the pitch and show that I can still play well, and that I definitely deserve to be here. I was extremely pleased that I was able to show other clubs that I’m fit, that I’m still a really good player, and that I don’t want to just rot away in England.”

Austrian journalist Peter Linden has now revealed what caused the exit. According to him, it was Daniel Farke that pushed for the defender to be sold this summer. The Leeds boss was reportedly angry when Wober left the club on loan after they were relegated. Farke was keen on keeping the Austrian, but the defender made his own decision.

Right call from Farke?

As a coach, you can only rely on players you trust. And nobody knows how the conversation between Farke and Wober went, but it seems what was said was big enough to cause this.

Fans cannot really complain, because since Wober left, the club has gotten better. And that is very much down to Daniel Farke. The Austrian will now be leaving Elland Road on a sour note.
