Wycombe Wanderers offer condolences to Liverpool after striker's sudden passing

The Portuguese forward, along with his brother Andre, 25, lost their lives in the early hours of Thursday, July 3.

According to numerous reports, Jota had been in a Lamborghini with his sibling when a tyre blowout occurred while overtaking a car on the A-52 motorway in Cernadilla, a municipality in the province of Zamora.

The vehicle then crashed and burst into flames.

The news of Jota’s death has caused profound shock across the football world, with his last social media post four an image of his wedding day, which took place on June 22 – 10 days before his sudden passing.

In a club statement, Liverpool said: “Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota.

“The club have been informed that the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.

“Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and requests the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.

“We will continue to provide them with our full support.”

A book of condolence has been set up at Anfield, Liverpool’s stadium, for fans to write in.

Tens of thousands of tributes have been left online by numerous players and clubs, with Wycombe offering their well-wishes to the current Premier League champions.

Many fans have left floral tributes outside Anfield, as well as Molineux, the home of Wolverhampton Wanderers – a side who brought Jota to English football.

Matt Wild, Wolves’ director of football operations & administration, who worked closely with Jota when he was at the club, said: “It’s such devastating news, not only for the passing of Diogo, which is just tragic enough, but to lose his brother as well.

“Leaving behind his wife, his three young children and the loss of his brother, it’s so difficult to comprehend. It’s just so sudden, it’s such a shock, and I think it will take a lot of us some time to process and come to terms with it.

“The impact he had at Wolves was huge. He was only here for three years, but what an important three years.

“He was so humble, so kind, so professional, yet determined and hungry.

“Everyone’s witnessed his progression throughout his career, from such a young age, to go to Liverpool at the age of 23 and go on to great success there, he’s won lots of trophies, and it couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.”

Jota began his career with Pacos de Ferreira and scored 15 goals in 43 appearances, which led him to move to Atletico Madrid in 2016, but he never played a competitive game for the Spanish side.

He ended up scoring 18 goals that year as the Old Gold won promotion to the Premier League after a six-year absence.

A move to Liverpool occurred in 2020, and across the last five years, he managed to bag 65 strikes in 182 matches, winning a Premier League title, two League Cups and an FA Cup.

Internationally, he played 49 times for Portugal, with his last career appearance being in this year’s Nations League final, which they won, beating Spain via a penalty shootout.
