Jarrad Branthwaite has put speculation about his Everton future to bed.

The 22-year-old has signed a new five-year contract to remain at the Hill Dickinson Stadium until 2030.

The defender is a key part of David Moyes‘ side, and it is a relief to have tied down one of their best players amid interest from the likes of Chelsea and Tottenham.

However, there are still question marks over whether Branthwaite will be a Toffees player for the remainder of that contract.

Branthwaite release clause in new Everton contract

The fact that Everton have got Branthwaite to sign a contract with significant interest in his services is a major coup.

MORE TOFFEES STORIES

However, iconic commentator Ian Darke believes that the new deal will have a release clause in it, for when the defender decides to move on to greater things, whether that is in the Premier League or not.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, he said: “I would think that might be the case, obviously, the sense of getting him to sign a long-term deal is that they have said to him, we are not going to stand in the way if the right kind of offer comes along.

“Obviously, you are not going this summer, but down the line, they are going to make sure they get a fee and his contract doesn’t run out, and you don’t have a Trent situation developing.

“Everton will get full whack for him, when he does go, we discussed this last time with Branthwaite, so I am not surprised by this, they have got to build the team around him if they want to push up the league.

“His first consideration is that he will want to be in that England squad for the World Cup, and at the moment, he doesn’t seem to be part of Thomas Tuchel’s plans.”

Everton need to match Branthwaite’s ambitions

If the Blues want to keep the Carlisle-born defender around, they need to match his ambitions on and off the pitch.

The Three Lions ace will want to play in the Champions League eventually, and if the Toffees cannot qualify, then he may look to depart.

If there is a release clause in his new deal, as Darke speculated, then it may be easier for him to do so in the future.
