Aston Villa spent £20million on Marcus Rashford and two other deals in the January transfer window.

The England international spent the second half of the season on loan at Villa Park after making the move from Manchester United.

The 27-year-old registered four goals and six assists in 17 appearances for Unai Emery’s side before picking up a hamstring injury.

Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Villa likely spent around £20million in wages on Rashford and fellow loanees Marco Asensio and Axel Disasi, who joined from PSG and Chelsea.

The trio helped the West Midlands giants record a sixth-place finish in the Premier League and reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Borson previously told Football Insider Villa likely earned £100million in Champions League prize money and matchday revenue.

Aston Villa landed extra £20m

Borson revealed Villa likely earned around £20million more than they expected from the Champions League.

He told Football Insider: “They did outperform probably their own expectations in the Champions League.

“They probably generated something like £20million more than they probably budgeted for because they went to the quarters in the new format.

“But I think it’s also likely that they spent about £20million more than they budgeted for.

“Their January spending probably reflected their chances in the second half of the season and, therefore, they invested an extra £20million of wages.

“We know that Rashford, for example, probably cost them in the order of let’s say £10million, and Asensio was probably something similar.

“They also had Disasi, so I would think that they spent most of the additional money that they received.”
