The 28-year-old father of three and his brother Andre died in a car crash in Zamora, Spain, according to reports.
They were reportedly travelling together when their vehicle left the road and caught fire.
In a statement on social media, [Swindon Town FC](http://www.thisisswindontownfc.co.uk) said: "The thoughts of everyone at Swindon Town are with Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, and loved ones, as well as all those connected with Liverpool during this incredibly difficult time.
"May they rest in peace."
Liverpool FC has also expressed its heartbreak at the loss.
A spokesman for the club said: "Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota.
"The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.
"Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates, and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.
"We will continue to provide them with our full support."
The crash comes just weeks after Jota married his long-term partner, Rute Cardoso, in Porto.
The couple, who had been together since 2012, have three children.
Jota joined Liverpool FC in 2020 and scored nine goals in the most recent season as the Reds won the Premier League title.
He was widely respected for his contributions on and off the pitch.
Tributes have poured in from across the football community, with fans and clubs expressing their shock and sadness at his sudden passing.
Former Liverpool defender turned TV pundit Jamie Carragher said "Devastating news about Diogo Jota and his brother Andre this morning.
"Thoughts are with everyone of their family and friends, especially his wife Rute and their three lovely kids."
The Portuguese national team also issued a heartfelt statement.
It said Jota was "not only a fantastic player with almost 50 caps for the national team, but also an extraordinary person" who was respected by teammates and opponents alike.
The statement added he had a "contagious joy" and was "a reference point in his own community".
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has offered his condolences after being asked about the Liverpool footballer at a media briefing.
He said: "Let me start with Jota because this is devastating news. I am sure I speak for everyone in saying our first thoughts are going to be with his family and his friends in particular.
"There are millions of Liverpool fans but also football fans and non-fans who will also be shocked by this.
"It is devastating and really important we bear in mind just how difficult a period this will be for his friends and for his family."
