Chris Paul eyeing surprising role as he ponders free agency decision

There’s no doubt that Chris Paul will be a first-ballot Hall of Famer once the ‘Point God’ decides to retire from the NBA. Sure, CP3 is still seeking his first championship ring in the NBA, but he’s a 12-time All-Star who also has 11 All-NBA selections to his name.

The former NBA MVP is now 40 years old, but he’s coming off a season in which he not only played all 82 regular season games, he actually started every one for the San Antonio Spurs. But now Paul is a free agent again, which means it’s time to make a decision on his playing future.

To no surprise, Paul has no shortage of potential suitors in free agency, including a possible reunion with the Los Angeles Clippers. However, according to the Associated Press’ Tim Reynolds, Paul is holding out hope to secure a starting role.

“Chris Paul wants to be a starter, we’re told, which is part of the reason why he evidently hasn’t made up his mind yet. Clippers still very hopeful he picks them.”

Tim Reynolds on Chris Paul

While teams have apparently yet to promise Paul a starting role, the Clippers are still eagerly awaiting his decision. Yet, as Reynolds notes, Paul is deciding between several offers.

On the surface, it may be surprising for a 20-year vet to expect to land a starting role, but that’s really the only life he’s ever known. There’s only been one season where Paul came off the bench, when he was a part of the Golden State Warriors in 2024, making 58 appearances but starting just 18 games. In other words, teams shouldn’t be too surprised by CP3’s demands.
