As Newcastle United’s search for a striker continues, one of the Magpies’ former forwards is on the move.
With Callum Wilson set to leave Newcastle, it is vital that Eddie Howe adds a striker to his squad. Alexander Isak needs more support, despite the improvement of Will Osula.
Newcastle United were hoping that Joao Pedro would be the answer to their problem. However, Pedro has joined Chelsea instead. It remains to be seen who could arrive instead, with Newcastle working on signing a mystery alternative.

The Venezuela international has signed for Real Oviedo on loan from Mexican side Pachuca. They have just been promoted to La Liga from the second tier of Spanish football, and have added the 35-year-old to their squad for the duration of the 2025/26 season.
Rondon’s arrival at Real Oviedo comes on the back of him competing at the Club World Cup. He was one of four former Newcastle United players at the Club World Cup, alongside Kenedy, Lloyd Kelly and Aleksandar Mitrovic.
The veteran striker had a tournament to forget, with Pachuca losing all three of their group games out in America. Rondon captained Pachuca, playing every single minute without registering a goal or an assist.

Salomon Rondon did not want to leave Newcastle United
Newcastle only had Rondon on loan, but he made quite the impression on Tyneside. Rafa Benitez brought him in on loan from West Brom in 2018, with the target man getting the number nine shirt as Dwight Gayle moved the other way.
Leading the line in black and white, Rondon scored 12 goals in 33 appearances in all competitions. Alongside Ayoze Perez and Miguel Almiron, Benitez had created a forward line for Newcastle United’s opponents to fear.
However, it was torn apart during the summer of 2019. Perez was sold to Leicester City, while Rondon’s loan deal did not become permanent. That is despite the fact that he wanted to stay at St James’ Park.
The man who brought Rondon to St James’ Park, Benitez, also left Newcastle United that summer when his contract expired. In the eyes of Rondon, that was the moment he knew his Toon career was not going to continue.
“It was a beautiful year for me last season. I loved it because the supporters were behind me all the time,” he told The Sun.
“I enjoyed playing with the number nine shirt, I scored goals and the atmosphere at St James’ Park was amazing. Always, I will remember that season.
“Was I disappointed to leave? Yes, because I was waiting for something. I was waiting for Rafa. When I went to the Copa America, I thought Rafa would sign for Newcastle. But he didn’t and when Rafa said he was going, my possibility to stay at Newcastle went down straight away.
“Rafa brought me to Newcastle and he fought with the owners to bring me there. So when Rafa said goodbye, I felt I would have to say goodbye as well. I understood in that moment I would not sign for Newcastle.”
