The five best moments of Diogo Jota's Liverpool career

The footballing world was left stunned when it was announced that Liverpool and Portugal striker Diogo Jota had passed away aged 28. The forward, who also played for the likes of Porto and Wolves, was involved in a road traffic accident in northwestern Spain en route to catching a ferry to return to Merseyside for pre-season training. The accident sadly took the lives of both him and his brother, Andre.

Jota has been remembered by those who knew him, both inside and outside of the sport, as a wonderful human being as well as a tremendous footballer. He represented his country on 49 occasions and won multiple pieces of silverware in a glittering, yet far too short, career.

As the footballing world continues to mourn Jota’s shocking loss, and his peers continue to reminisce about the man away from the pitch, GIVEMESPORT has decided to dedicate this article to his footballing legacy, as we take a look at Diogo Jota’s five greatest moments in a Liverpool shirt.

Debut Goal vs Arsenal

Jota made an immediate impact

Having already proven his Premier League quality during a two-year stint at Wolves, Jota was added to the Liverpool ranks in 2020 to help bolster the attacking options of the defending Premier League champions, which already included Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.

If Jota had dreamt up what his debut for the famous club would be like, it probably wouldn’t have looked too dissimilar to this. Coming off the bench against Arsenal, the striker made an immediate impact as he brought the ball down on his knee and fired a volley into the bottom corner to get off the mark.

The only thing missing was the celebrating Liverpool faithful in the stands - but that would come sooner rather than later.

Hat-Trick Versus Atalanta

Jota proved he was Champions League ready with this performance

Just a few months on from his debut goal against Arsenal, Jota was proving his worth in Europe’s elite competition as he netted a Champions League hat-trick against Atalanta. The first was the pick of the bunch - a sumptuous dink over the goalkeeper despite tight pressure from a defender. His second came less than 15 minutes later as he brought down a long ball, cut inside and turned it home brilliantly at the near post.

His third showcased brilliant composure and footballing intelligence as he dragged the ball away from the onrushing goalkeeper, leaving him an empty net to slide the ball into. It was still early in his Anfield career, but performances - and more importantly, goals - like that were an early endorsement of a player who would go on to be one of the club’s best finishers.

Jota's Favourite Liverpool Goal

The Portuguese international was at it again against Arsenal

Twelve months after his Atalanta heroics, Jota was putting Arsenal to the sword again – this time in front of an electric Anfield crowd. With the pick of the efforts, it was the Portuguese who stepped up to give his side a two-goal cushion in what would turn out to be a 4–0 win that ended the Gunners' 10-game unbeaten run.

The striker was gifted possession on the edge of the box by Arsenal full-back Nuno Tavares, but still had plenty of work to do. As he drove into the penalty area, he sat the sliding Ben White down before clinically rounding Aaron Ramsdale and slotting into an empty net.

Jota would later go on to say that it was his favourite goal for the club. For that reason, it has to make this list.

Perfect Final Derby Chapter

Jota would score the only goal of the game in his final ever Merseyside derby

Prior to last season, Jota had never scored a goal in a Merseyside derby at Anfield. The only time he had netted against the Toffees in Liverpool red was at Goodison Park during an emphatic 4-1 victory. Little did anyone know that he would be scoring in his last – but what a fitting time and place to score your final goal in professional football.

Some good pressure from the Portuguese saw him win possession back on the edge of the penalty area. A quick interchange with Luis Diaz later and he was in shooting distance. After fashioning some space with some neat footwork, he let fly across Jordan Pickford’s goal as the Englishman committed the wrong way. It not only won the game, but it put the Reds ever closer to the Premier League title and, unexpectedly, gave us one final memory of the man who finished it off.

Number 20 Celebrates Number 20

Jota won his first Premier League title to cap off his career

Just 39 days separated Jota getting his hands on the Premier League trophy for the first time and his tragic passing. But the final images of him celebrating with the trophy are the perfect sporting ones to go alongside the beautiful, yet heartbreaking, pictures of him and his wife at their wedding just 10 days before the final chapter was closed.

Number 20 has symbolised Liverpool in many ways this season. The pursuit of their 20th top-flight title - a milestone that would see them draw level with Manchester United — has been a dream for fans ever since the Red Devils overtook them. And in their journey to achieving that goal, they stumbled across another number 20 - one who was selfless, who scored goals, and who the Kop learned to adore. They sang his name, and no doubt will continue to do so.

His name is Diogo.
