Spain 5 - 0 Portugal
This game in Bern began with a minute’s silence for Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva who tragically died earlier in the day.
It took less than 90 seconds for Spain to take the lead and score their first of four goals in the opening half of the game. It was a brilliantly taken early striker from Esther Gonzalez controlling a long ball over the top from Olga Carmona before volleying home for the quickest ever goal at a Women’s Euros (one minute and 27 seconds).
It was two inside seven minutes as teenager Vicky Lopez slid inside the six yard box to touch home Mariona Caldentey’s low cross from the right.
Two more were added in the final five minutes of the first half. Alexia Putellas grabbed the third for La Roja off another Caldentey assist, with 32-year-old Gonzalez grabbing her second goal before the half time whistle.
The only goal of the second period came in injury time when Cristina Martin-Prieto headed home the fifth goal from a Salma Paralluelo pass.
"We’ve started the tournament well. In a competition like this, winning the first game and scoring early is really important,” said Spanish coach Montse Tomé speaking to UEFA. “We had some great moments in the first half, went 4-0 up, and followed the game plan perfectly. I’m happy with the team’s performance."
