In the club’s statement announcing his arrival, it was claimed that he’ll officially start work on Thursday 3 July, but I think it’s clear to see for anyone with working eyes that his influence is already being felt all over the football club.
Ghisolfi represents a step up to the ‘next level’, whereby Sunderland start acting and carrying themselves like a top club.
To be a top club, you need to have a leadership structure that’s representative of what you are, and having already developed and established a strong leadership group over recent years, we’re now adding proper, quality people to the fold that can make a difference.
As great as Kristjaan Speakman is, he can’t spread himself too thinly and in truth, his strengths aren’t in the European market. To hire an equivalent who’s already worked at a number of top clubs is a huge move and it could well be one of the most important bits of business that Sunderland AFC do this summer.
I can’t claim to know Ghisolfi but it’s fairly clear that he wouldn’t have left a club as big as Roma to come to Sunderland if he had not been wowed by the plans that Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, Juan Sartori and Speakman have now that we’re in the Premier League, so this should give us fans a real sense of excitement knowing that our club is a massively attractive project for ambitious and talented people who are sought after in the game.
This is just the beginning and the next few months of the transfer window should be really exciting.
I honestly can’t wait to see what this guy can do; it’s shaping up to be the most exciting summer in the club’s history, and hasn’t that been a long time coming?

Well, I’ve got to say I’m pretty buzzing about Florent Ghisolfi coming in as Director of Football.
I didn’t really know much about him at first but from what I’ve seen, he looks spot on for us.
Short-term, it sounds like he’s already looking at some decent Premier League-level signings.
Whether or not they’re absolutely 100% his signings is unclear but even so, he appears to be exactly what we needed. Noah Sidiki and Habib Diarra look like proper quality players incoming — hopefully!
Longer term, I reckon he’ll build on the good work already happening with our academy. It’s always great to see local lads coming through and it sounds like he knows how to push that on even further.
Overall, I’m genuinely excited about this move. It could finally be the step we need. Can’t wait to see how it goes!
