Railston: Manchester United's mixed relationship with goalkeeper Andre Onana will continue

Onana looks set to stay in Manchester.

Andre Onana staying at Manchester United this summer felt like the most likely outcome.

The Manchester Evening News reported last month that Onana remains after a disappointing campaign and will only consider leaving if the club want to sell him.

In addition, the Saudi Arabian club that was interested in signing Onana (Neom SC) are set to sign goalkeeper Marcin Bulka from Nice, which further suggests that he will stay at United for next season.

Monaco have been linked with a move for Onana after finishing third in Ligue 1 and qualifying for the , but it's doubtful they have the funds to submit an appropriate bid.

The French club have just signed Paul Pogba upon his return to football after a ban. Pogba will not be earning the kind of wages he did in his mid-20s, but will still receive a decent package.

Onana has been preparing under the assumption and it's understood Ruben Amorim wants to keep the 29-year-old, which some fans will question.

It's easily forgotten, but Onana made an impressively strong start to the 2024/2025 season and looked to have grown into his role as first-choice goalkeeper before the wheels began to fall off in the winter.

Onana won the Premier League's save of the month award for his outstanding double stop against Crystal Palace in September and somehow bettered it against Fenerbahce in October. Then it all started to go downhill for Onana when United lost 2-0 against Arsenal in December.

The Cameroon international conceded two goals from corners, which was followed by a mistake against Nottingham Forest and another error against Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League.

Then the Lyon debacle happened in April. Nemanja Matic said Onana was "statistically one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United modern history" before the first leg, and Onana was at fault for both goals.

United pulled off a spectacular victory against Lyon in the reverse leg at Old Trafford and Onana sprinted to embrace Amorim on the touchline because Harry Maguire got him out of jail.

Onana has never truly convinced the entire fanbase since his arrival from Inter Milan and his performances last season made the majority of fans completely lose patience with him.

The supporters who were on the fence about Onana now have the opinion that he isn't good enough. The problem is, other areas of the team need to be strengthened before a new goalkeeper is signed, which means United and Onana's turbulent relationship looks set to continue in 2025/2026.

You don't have to be a fortune teller to predict how Onana's season will unfold. He will deliver a few excellent performances, but the inevitable mistakes will creep in sooner rather than later.

Erratic is probably the perfect word to describe Onana. He is certainly not a goalkeeper who can be relied upon and can make embarrassing howlers at unexpected moments during matches.

United allowed David de Gea to leave upon the expiry of his contract in the summer of 2023 because his mistakes had become too regular and some performances were indefensible.

Onana has made a similar number of mistakes without having the previous class that De Gea had banked. It was still the correct decision to allow De Gea to leave because United needed a modern goalkeeper, but the feeling is they botched the succession and need a new No.1 stopper.

That will have to be put on the back burner for now, though. United are prioritising other positions in the summer transfer window and Onana is expected to play a third season for the club.

Onana is set to be first choice for another 12 months, but his future must be uncertain after that.
