Details of Liverpool player Diogo Jota’s funeral have now been confirmed

Details of Diogo Jota's funeral have been revealed following the tragic death of the Liverpool forward and his brother, Andre Silva, in a road traffic accident in the early hours of Thursday morning. As the brothers overtook another vehicle, the Lamborghini they were in suffered a tyre blowout, crashing and catching fire just 10 miles across the Portuguese border into Spain.

Since the heartbreaking news broke, the football world and wider community have united in tribute to the beloved pair. A makeshift memorial outside Anfield now stretches more than 100 yards, adorned with flowers, balloons, and messages of love. But it’s not just their footballing journeys that are being remembered - Jota had only recently married his childhood sweetheart in front of the altar, with their three young children by their side, just two weeks ago.

Jota, 28, and Andre, 26, will be laid to rest on Saturday morning, following a wake on Friday in the same venue where he was married, according to local priest Jose Manuel Macedo.

According to the Metro, the funerals of Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, will be held in Sao Cosme, a half-hour drive inland from the northern Portuguese city of Porto, at 10am on Saturday, which is where he married Rute Cardoso, his girlfriend since 2012, on June 22.

On Thursday afternoon, hearses were seen pulling up to a funeral home in Puebla de Sanabria, the town in north-western Spain where the bodies of Diogo and Andre were taken. See below:

The siblings were driving on their way back to England as they planned to travel by ferry due to doctors advising the Liverpool star not to fly after minor lung surgery. Rui Laura of CNN Portugal explained: "The surgery he had was lung surgery, and he had been advised against flying following this.

"He was on his way to the northern Spanish port city of Santander to cross the ferry and reach the UK that way and carry on with the car once he reached Britain."

Diogo Jota 'Advised Not to Fly' Before Car Crash Cost Him His Life

The tragic events took place just 10 miles across the Portugal and Spain border.

The idea isn’t to live forever, but to leave something that will. Jota, who joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020, made 182 appearances for the Reds, scoring 65 goals and providing 26 assists, helping the club to a Premier League title and cementing a legacy that will never be forgotten, before then doing the exact same with Portugal in the Nations League - a country whom he earnt 50 caps with.

While Liverpool have since released a statement of support for everyone affected - asking for privacy for those processing the devastating news - Jurgen Klopp, Steven Gerrard, and Cristiano Ronaldo are among those who have paid tribute to the forward, who was - and always will be - adored for the infectious smile he always wore whenever he took to the pitch.
