Alex Moreno to Leeds United transfer latest - Aston Villa fee, Junior Firpo factor, La Liga blow

Leeds United reportedly continue to watch developments over the future of Alex Moreno at Aston Villa.

Moreno, 32, spent last season on loan at Nottingham Forest but has returned to his parent club despite that deal including an option to make the move permanent.

The left-back made 19 appearances for Forest across all competitions; however, only four were this year after Neco Williams displaced him in early December.

Lucas Digne did similar during the 2023/24 season at Villa, who then paid £37.5million for Ian Maatsen from Chelsea which meant Moreno became available last year. That stance seems unchanged this summer.

TEAMtalk claims Villa have a £5m asking price, two-and-a-half years after signing the Spaniard from Real Betis for £12m.

Leeds are said to be one of multiple clubs monitoring the situation, including some from Spain.

Moreno is said to prefer returning to La Liga, where he has played in five-and-a-half of his 13 seasons as a professional. That most recent top-flight stint with Betis began by being a replacement for Junior Firpo, who signed for Barcelona.

Six years later, with the latter set to re-join his former club, Moreno could again replace the same player. However, as Firpo was last season, he is now in the final year of his contract.

The same scenario that Leeds have dealt with this summer could conceivably play out next year. Moreno waiting out the next 12 months would allow the player to choose his next destination, especially if signing for a Spanish side is favoured.

The Whites, though, need to sign a left-back for next season. That is because only Isaac Schmidt is currently under contract, albeit Sam Byram could still potentially re-sign after his deal expired.

Leeds like Gabriel Gudmundsson, however, club contacts and the Lille player have rubbished rumours he was spotted at Thorp Arch last month.

The Sweden international did, however, acknowledge that the Whites were a good team in a recent interview.
