Brenden Aaronson surely worried after hearing who's open to Leeds move, but Piroe will be buzzing - opinion

Brenden Aaronson looks like he’s in a bit of transfer limbo this summer, following what was a very mixed season in the Championship with Leeds United.

Looking purely at the numbers from last season, Brenden Aaronson had a decent showing. He scored nine times, assisted twice and featured in all 46 of the club’s Championship games on the way to the title.

But ask any Leeds fan and they’ll tell you that the USMNT man was very divisive: often missing in games, failing to truly live up to his potential, and just not contributing as much as someone in such a key position on the pitch should do.

Going into this summer it’s been reported that Aaronson could leave Leeds United. The 2022 signing, who cost the Whites £25million from Red Bull Salzburg, is thought to have offers from Germany, and depending on who Leeds sign this summer, he could himself decide to move on.

Leeds have several no.10s on their radar right now, one being Gustavo Hamer.

Gustavo Hamer open to Premier League switch amid Leeds United transfer rumours

Hamer has long been linked with a move to Elland Road. But after Sheffield United lost the Championship play-off final, rumours linking the Dutchman with a move across Yorkshire have heated up. It’s understood that Leeds will sign one of Hamer or Emi Buendia for the no.10 position this summer.

But last month, reports in the Netherlands claimed that Hamer wanted to join PSV this summer, and challenge for titles with the Dutch giants. That claim has now been ruled out, though. It’s now understood that Hamer is open to a Premier League move this summer and so a move to Leeds United could quickly materialise.

In more good news, Hamer could leave Sheffield United for just £6.8m this summer, which would certainly make him a very cheap signing for the Premier League ahead of next season.

What Gustavo Hamer signing for Leeds United could mean for Brenden Aaronson

If Hamer arrived at Thorp Arch tomorrow then he instantly takes Aaronson’s place in the no.10 role. The 28-year-old Hamer was named the Championship Player of the Season last year, scoring 10 and assisting eight more in 44 league games.

Not only did he outscore Aaronson, but he claimed many more assists than him too, and that would be good news for Joel Piroe who also looked lost in games last season, but who would certainly benefit from having a more creative no.10 behind him.

Piroe won the Golden Boot last season. He ended the season with 19 goals after Piroe scored four against Stoke City in the run in, but he too wasn’t immune from criticism. That said, if Aaronson couldn’t get involved in games then there was very little chance for Piroe to get involved.

But not only Aaronson; having Hamer pulling the strings behind the striker would allow for Dan James and whoever it is on the right to make those runs in behind, knowing that there’s a player who can pick out those killer passes.

All in all, Hamer signing could really unlock a lot of attacking potential for Leeds.
