Leeds United could still make a move for Norwich City star Josh Sargent this summer.

Sargent enjoyed a prolific season in the Championship with Norwich, despite suffering a groin injury which saw the American sidelined for two months.

Ending the season with 15 goals and five assists, the 25-year-old has attracted several suitors this summer, with a return to Premier League football on the cards.

Leeds set for internal transfer battle

Despite extensive Leeds links to Sargent this summer, reports last week suggested that the striker is not at the top of the list for Leeds higher-ups.

That reluctance has seen Burnley reportedly enter the race, with the Clarets also keen to strengthen ahead of their return to the Premier League.

However, according to The Sun’s print edition (July 4, page 52), Leeds boss Daniel Farke is personally keen to sign Sargent, and believes that the American can supply his team with the pace and strength which they currently lack in attack.

That could lead to a stand-off of sorts between Farke and those who sign off on transfers, given the German clearly wants Sargent more so than the 49ers, who are not making it a priority signing.

Sargent joined Norwich in 2021 after a promising season in the Bundesliga for Werder Bremen.

Sargent has thrived in England’s second division

Deployed more prominently as a winger, Sargent initially struggled to adapt to the Premier League – despite scoring a sensational scorpion kick against Watford.

The Championship was where the American began to find his feet, scoring 13 goals in the 2022/23 season before scoring 16 the next.

And yet another productive campaign in the second division has convinced some Premier League clubs as well as others, reportedly including AS Roma, that he is ready to retake the step-up.

With three years remaining on the players contract, Norwich will not be in a hurry to sanction a sale to any team – although Leeds may be forced to decide whether to pull the trigger sooner, rather than later.

Leeds need firepower in summer transfer window

Leeds have already made a positive start to the summer, after completing the signings of Jaka Bijol, Sebastiaan Bornauw and Lukas Nmecha.

But now is the time to add serious firepower. Better than anyone, Leeds know the brutality of the Premier League.

Without genuine difference-makers, the overpowering intensity can easily chew you up and spit you back out.

Leeds must weigh up their options and decide whether Sargent can be the man to make that difference.
