Diogo Jota was in a "happy moment" before his tragic death.

Jota, 28, lost his life in a road traffic accident alongside his brother, Andre Silva, when their car a Lamborghini, left the road due to a tyre blowout while overtaking another vehicle and then caught fire.

Before the accident, the forward spoke to the president of Gondomar while driving towards Zamora, in Spain.

Álvaro Cerqueira, president of Gondomar SC, was reportedly one of the last people Diogo Jota spoke to before the tragedy, speaking to the Liverpool star a couple of hours before his death.

“It was just after 10 pm last night, we were on the phone and he was fine,” the president of the club where Jota started his training and took his first steps towards becoming a world-renowned player told JN.

Cerqueira and Jota had regular conversations: “We spoke almost every week, and I know he was going through a happy moment,” he added.

Although Jota played for Liverpool and André Silva moved to Penafiel for the last two seasons, the pitch at the São Miguel Stadium was always available to the brothers.

“When Diogo needed to train during the off-season, he would ask to come here, and we would always make everything available. His brother would usually come too, and they would both train.

Affected by the pain of losing two friends, the president of Gondomar SC did not want to elaborate further: “It is difficult to talk at a time like this, but what will remain is the image of two very humble people, who leave a huge void.”

Tributes have poured in from around the footballing world.
