Mohammed Kudus is looking destined to join West Ham United’s London rivals Tottenham, and Hammers fans aren’t happy about it.

Many supporters are upset that David Sullivan would sell a key player to Tottenham, even for a potential fee as high as £60million.

The sting of losing a key player is intensified when they join a bitter rival, but it seems West Ham’s owners aren’t too bothered about that.

This transfer has put the rivalry between West Ham and Tottenham back in the spotlight.

It has been reported that Spurs chairman Daniel Levy doesn’t get on with David Sullivan, but is willing to ‘bite the bullet’ to negotiate Kudus’ transfer.

MORE WEST HAM STORIES

Discussing the deal on their talkSPORT morning show (3 July), presenter Jim White asked former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan how he felt about selling players to rival clubs.

Although he did answer the question briefly, Jordan seemed more interested in debunking the Spurs/Hammers rivalry altogether.

He said: “There’s no massive rivalry between West Ham and Tottenham, is there? They’re London football clubs, they’re both in the same division, but is there this massive rivalry? I don’t recall there being one.”

Kudus would be the first West Ham player to join Tottenham since 2011, but Jordan insisted that’s more to do with West Ham not having any players that Spurs would want in the last 15 years.

While he normally has his finger on the pulse of London football, the former Palace owner seems to have slept on the hatred between these two clubs.

West Ham and Tottenham have an intense rivalry

Most West Ham fans have a disdain for Tottenham.

Historically, this stems from a class divide between the two sets of London fans.

In more recent times, Hammers fans can’t stand Spurs fans’ sense of superiority, despite their club having won barely any silverware in the last two decades.

The rivalry goes both ways too.

Some Spurs fans might insist they don’t care about West Ham, but they seemed to care after the Hammers denied them a Champions League place on the final day of the 2005-06 season.

They cared enough to release a DVD of their 4-3 victory at Upton Park in 2007, a win that meant little for their own ambitions, but which they thought would help to relegate the Hammers.

Yes, the Hammers hate Millwall more. Spurs’ main rivals are Arsenal.

But if you’ve ever been in the stands for a West Ham vs Tottenham fixture, you’ll know the rivalry means something.
