Nilden on Euro 2025: “It will be one of the hardest tournaments”

With UEFA Euro 2025 well underway, Amanda Nilden is expecting ‘one of the toughest tournaments’ as she gets ready to represent Sweden in their tournament opener this evening against Denmark (5pm).

Having been named in Peter Gerhardsson’s squad for the trip to Switzerland, this will be the defender’s second appearance at a major international tournament – having been involved in the 2022 European Championships.

Reaching the semi-final of the competition, losing to eventual winners England, Amanda started in the quarter-final win over Belgium and was named in the matchday squad in the four other games.

Now, with plenty more experience under her belt, earning 13 caps for her nation, the 26-year-old is relishing the chance to compete in a more competitive tournament this summer.

> It’s my second European Championships now and I feel I come into this with more confidence in what to expect.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” she told us. “It’s my second European Championships now and I feel I come into this with more confidence in what to expect, but all teams have developed a lot, so all the games will be really competitive.

“It will probably be one of the hardest tournaments as all teams have improved a lot.”

Sweden kick-off Group C with a clash against Denmark in Geneva and Amanda spoke of her pride to represent her nation on the biggest stage in international football.

“This is what you play for,” she added. “To be representing your country in an international tournament is a dream for any child starting to play football.

“For me, this tournament is special in the way that this season has not been upwards. But I’m happy and proud to be here and to have the opportunity to represent my country.”
