Rotherham United confident of securing Manchester United midfielder

Manchester United’s pre-season is already heating up with several young players hoping to impress Ruben Amorim and force their way into first-team plans.

Kobbie Mainoo’s rise under former manager, Erik ten Hag, has given hope to others in the academy, and all eyes are now on the next breakout star from Carrington.

The midfield department is one of the areas being closely monitored, especially with Amorim reportedly keen on balance between youth and experience.

With United also open to trimming their squad this summer, multiple academy players could either be loaned out or moved on permanently.

One player who now finds himself at a career crossroads is Dan Gore.

The 19-year-old midfielder, once dubbed “captain material” and even likened to Roy Keane by his former Burnley youth coach Lewis Craig, has endured a string of unfortunate setbacks in his quest for first-team experience.

Gore’s first loan to Port Vale in early 2024 was supposed to provide a vital stepping stone, but he made just one appearance before being recalled to Old Trafford.

He bounced back from a dislocated shoulder to join Rotherham United in January, where hopes were high after a standout debut against Birmingham City.

But just as momentum started to build, Dan Gore suffered a foot injury, with Rotherham boss Steve Evans branding the setback as “unbelievable”.

Despite only making three appearances, Gore made a big impression, and Rotherham’s new manager Matt Hamshaw has now confirmed strong interest in bringing him back.

“We’re in regular communication with Manchester United,” said Hamshaw in an interview with The Rotherham Advertiser.

“They’re seeing what happens with their pre-season and we’ll go from there.”

Hamshaw is confident that the Millers are in a strong position: “I think that, if he does come out, we’ll be near the front of the race.

“I’m hoping it’s before the start of the season but with these things you never know.

“It could happen tomorrow, it could happen in three weeks.”

The Rotherham boss was full of praise for Gore, adding: “I really like Dan.

“I like his attitude, I like his commitment, I like his tenacity, I like his work ethic, I like everything he represents.”

Gore’s previous loan spells were both mid-season moves, which didn’t give him enough time to properly integrate or recover from injuries.

United are reportedly considering selling the midfielder permanently this summer, though no final decision has been made yet.

A full-season loan to Rotherham – where he’s already familiar with the environment – could offer Gore the chance to finally settle and show what he’s capable of.

With pre-season soon to be underway, the next few weeks will be crucial in determining whether Gore gets a last chance to impress Amorim or is moved on in search of senior minutes elsewhere.

For now, his future remains in the balance – but the door hasn’t completely closed just yet.
