India and England players are not wearing Black armbands for the 3rd Day of the 2nd Test at Edgbaston on Friday (July 4).

The two nations are colliding in a crucial match and the visitors have a firm grip in the proceedings. England are behind by 510 runs and lost three wickets in the final session yesterday. They will have to mount a strong comeback if they are to create any inroads in it.

IND vs ENG Why India and England players are not Wearing Black Armbands Today despite Diogo Jota s Death

Diogo Jota Passed Away on July 3

Diogo Jota tragically died in a car crash in northwestern Spain on July 3, alongside his brother, André Silva, aged 25. The accident occurred around 12:30 am on the A-52 highway near Cernadilla, Zamora, when their Lamborghini went off the road due to a suspected tire blowout while overtaking, subsequently catching fire.

Jota, who had married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso just 11 days earlier, left behind three young children. He was travelling to Santander to catch a ferry back to England for Liverpool's pre-season training, advised against flying due to recent surgery. Liverpool expressed devastation, requesting privacy for the family.

IND vs ENG: Why are Players not wearing Black Armbands Today?

India and England players have repeatedly worn black armbands this series. On the first day of 1st Test, the two teams wore it as a tribute to the Ahmedabad Plane Crash victims, as 275 people lost their lives following a devastating crash. In the 1st Test itself, the players united in remembrance for former English pacer David Lawrence and then former India player Dilip Doshi, as both passed away during the course of the match.

The two teams are commemorating cricket-related events, not matters outside their sport. The England and India cricket teams have purposely limited black armbands to occasions when someone connected to cricket, players or events directly tied to their sport, has passed away. Since Jota was not a figure in their sport, the black armbands are missing.
