Everton are expected to be busy in this summer’s transfer market having released a lot of first-team players.

The likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Michael Keane have all left the club and replacements will be needed.

There has been great news on Merseyside recently as both Seamus Coleman and Jarrad Branthwaite signed new contracts.

And it appears as if there could be more similarly good news emerging from Bramley-Moore Dock today.

Everton have been in contract negotiations with Idrissa Gueye for a long time.

The club believes that Gueye could still make a strong impact in the Premier League, but they were only willing to offer him a one-year contract, while the Senegalese international was holding out for at least two years.

Gueye became a free agent after his contract expired on 30 June, but negotiations have continued between the two parties.

Now, Foot Mercato (4 July) reports that the midfielder will sign a new contract at Everton on Friday. It will supposedly be a one-year deal with the option to extend for a further year.

Gueye deal will free up funds that can be used on a new signing

Gueye is 35, but he performed consistently well in the heart of Everton’s midfield last season.

David Moyes will be pleased to have him back and available for selection.

Idrissa Gueye 2024-25 statistics

The cost of replacing an international midfielder who is proven in the Premier League is substantial these days.

Everton may have had to spend £25m-£30m or more depending on the age and calibre of player they were targeting.

They can now use that money to improve another area of the pitch. Many fans would agree it would be well spent on a striker to replace the departing Calvert-Lewin.

It’s a smart piece of business from Everton. Gueye looked as fit as a fiddle last year, and his presence will add great value to the first-team squad.

Overall, Everton have done well when it comes to tying existing players to new deals. Moyes and his recruitment team can now turn their attention to signing some exciting new stars to join them.
