Sources: Leeds United have ‘agreed terms’ with Junior Firpo replacement despite training video sighting

Leeds United are eyeing Gabriel Gudmundsson as a replacement for Junior Firpo after releasing the defender on Monday.

Following a four-year stay at Elland Road, Real Betis seem like Firpo’s next move after leaving Leeds United this week.

It’s been reported for some time now that Leeds want Lille left-back Gabriel Gudmundsson. In fact, Gudmundsson is one of the best suggestions for Leeds, considering that he is in the final year of his deal.

They aren’t the only Premier League team in the race for his signature, however, with Everton and Burnley rivalling Leeds for Gudmundsson this summer.

Lille’s Gabriel Gudmundsson agrees terms over a switch to Leeds

Last week, Gudmundsson gave his verdict on a move to Leeds this summer. Nothing has yet materialised but it has been reported previously that Gudmundsson could cost Leeds as little as £8 million.

Of course, it’s not a done deal yet but the noises are positive and Gudmundsson has explained what he wants from Leeds or whoever his next club is, too.

That’s despite the fact he has been seen in training with Lille. The video was posted on social media yesterday, albeit it is unknown whether it was of yesterday’s session or during a training held last week.

Our sources confirmed to us this week that a deal between Leeds and Gudmundsson is accelerating and that it was a case of when not if.

Since the release of the video, Leeds United News sources have confirmed a further development. That is because the Swedish international has agreed personal terms with the club and agreed on the move to Leeds.

However, negotiations with Leeds and Lille are not yet complete and the Ligue 1 outfit are demanding a fee closer to €15 million (£13 million) for Gudmundsson.

That’s despite talks taking place starting at closer to €10 million (£8.6 million) initially from Leeds’ side. Some sort of compromise is yet to be found between clubs despite the club and player agreeing to a move.

Gabriel Gudmundsson’s career stats so far

A 15-time Swedish international, the 26-year-old has also featured 137 times for Lille in the last four seasons for the Ligue 1 outfit — which is excellent availability.

Gabriel Gudmundsson’s career stats

Having first started his career as a winger or wing-back, Gudmundsson is now predominantly a left-back. But he remains capable of playing across the defence and even further forward, making him a versatile asset for Lille and Sweden.

As he has aged, Leeds target Gudmundsson’s profile has developed and he has become a better defender. It’s why he has been trusted to operate as a centre-back in a back three in some games for Sweden.

The two clubs are not far apart in terms of their valuations of the player, but there is still work to do before a deal can progress to the medical stage.
