Road where Diogo Jota died is a notorious blackspot where wolves roam in traffic

The dual carriageway where the footballer and his brother died has sharp bends, bad visibility and a risk of wildlife roaming free, a Civil Guard spokesman told The i Paper

MADRID – The road where Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota and his brother were killed when their Lamborghini crashed has been described as a black spot which has seen a series of accidents.

The 28-year-old Portuguese international striker and his brother Andre Silva, 26, died just after midnight on Thursday morning on the A-52 at Palacios de Sanabria, near the city of Zamora in northwestern Spain.

It is believed that the Lamborghini they were travelling in veered off the road after a tyre blew out.

The car burst into flames and emergency workers were unable to save the men’s lives.

The section of the road where the accident took place is known as a black spot because it has a series of tight bends, poor visibility and often animals including wolves or deer cross veer out in front of traffic, according to a Spanish Civil Guard spokesman who would not be named, as is custom.

The A-52, which is also known locally as the Autovia de las Rias Baixas, has seen a series of accidents in recent years.

Last month, a 60-year-old woman was seriously injured when her car careered off the road at the same place that claimed the lives of Jota and his brother.

There were 19 road accidents on the A-52 in 2023, according to the latest available figures from the Spanish Transport Ministry.

“The place where this accident took place is known as a black spot because of its sharp curves, bad visibility and the fact animals like deer and wolves can veer out across the road at times,” a Civil Guard spokesman told The i Paper.

Sergi Garcia, an expert in wolves, which are common in the area, and who has driven many times on this stretch of road, said other accidents had happened on the road in the past.

“It is an area where there is a high density of animals like wolves and deer,” he said.

“It is an open road so perhaps if you are driving a Lamborghini it is a place where you can drive as fast as you want, especially if it is in the early hours of the morning. But I don’t know what the police think is the cause of the crash.”
