Damian Lillard rumors: Free agent ‘in no rush’ to choose team (report)

Damian Lillard became an unexpected name to watch this summer after the Bucks elected to waive-and-stretch the remaining two years of his contract. Even though Lillard is expected to miss this upcoming season with his ruptured Achilles tendon, a team could still sign him so he’s with the team.

The Celtics are interested in signing Lillard, along with the Warriors, Lakers and likely other teams across the league. But according to NBA insider Chris Haynes, it doesn’t sound like a decision is imminent when it comes to the nine-time All-Star guard.

“Free agent star Damian Lillard is open to signing with a team this offseason under the right terms and conditions as he continues rehabbing,” Haynes posted on social media. “He is receiving ample interest, but is in no rush to make a decision.”

Lillard is in an interesting spot as he’s going to get paid his maximum salary over the next two seasons from the Bucks regardless of what team he ends up on. So he could rehab on his own or sign with a team, rehabbing with them, while getting to know the system during the 2025-26 season.

The Celtics being connected to Lillard is noteworthy as there’s reportedly interest from both sides. It remains to be seen what monetarily the Celtics could offer Lillard in a potential deal. But regardless of whichever team Lillard ends up on, it’ll be a low-risk move even with the 34-year-old guard coming off the Achilles injury.

Lillard could view the Celtics as a potential fit after taking the 2025-26 season off. Boston is looking at a retooling year, but with Lillard unavailable, that doesn’t affect the guard much anyway. Plus, Lillard’s friendship with Jayson Tatum, who’s also rehabbing his own Achilles injury, is well-documented. But, for now, it appears Lillard is mulling over his sudden free agency options.
