Mohamed Salah has sent his message on the Diogo Jota tragedy.

In the early hours of Friday, the bodies of former Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva returned to their hometown of Gondomar, ushering in what is certain to be one of the most sorrowful weekends in the history of Portuguese football.

Thousands of fans laid flowers and scarves outside Anfield, with many of his peers describing Jota as a “true family man”.

A joint wake for the brothers is being held this Friday afternoon at Igreja Matriz de Gondomar near their hometown.

The funeral will take place on Saturday.

Tributes poured in from across the football world.

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp expressed heartbreak at losing “not only a fantastic player, but also a great friend, husband and father,” promising to honour Jota’s legacy on and off the pitch.

Cristiano Ronaldo lamented on social media, “It doesn’t make any sense. Just now we were together in the national team, now you’re gone. Rest in peace, Diogo and André. We will all miss you.”

Now Mohamed Salah, taking to social media, wrote:

“I am truly lost for words. Until yesterday, I never thought there would be something that would frighten me of going back to Liverpool after the break.”

“Team mates come and go but not like this. It’s going to be extremely difficult to accept that Diogo won’t be there when we go back.”

“My thoughts are with his wife, his children, and of course his parents who suddenly lost their children.”

“Those close to Diogo and his brother Andre need all the support they can get. They will never be forgotten.”
