Newcastle United held talks with the striker earlier this year.

Jonathan David is set to join Serie A giants Juventus on a free transfer.

Ranking among Europe’s top strikers during his time in France with 109 goals in 232 appearances, David quickly emerged as one of the most sought-after free agents on the planet. He attracted interest from all of Europe’s top leagues but the search for a new club narrowed down to Italy.

Jonathan David chooses Juventus as his next club

Serie A champions Napoli initially emerged as frontrunners, only for Juventus to hijack talks. It has taken a couple of weeks to finalise but David has this week got the green light to complete a move to the Old Lady.

The Canadian arrived in Turin on Friday morning ahead of undergoing a medical and penning a five-year contract until June 2030.

Gazetta dello Sport reported last week that David had agreed a yearly salary of £5millin - which equates to around 100,000-a-week - though the hold up was due to his representatives demanding a staggering £13million in commissions.

Newcastle United eyeing Alexander Isak back-up

As it stands, Callum Wilson is out of contract at Newcastle United and is widely expected leave. However, the club are yet to make an official announcement. Their last update came on June 6 and in the statement said that a new contract could still be agreed.

Wilson has scored 49 goals in 130 appearances since joining from AFC Bournemouth in 2020 for £20million but endured a frustrating 2024-25 season with injuries, which restricted him to just three starts. His only goal came in the FA Cup fourth round win away to Birmingham City, while his last Premier League goal was over a year ago in May 2024.

The 33-year-old’s limited appearances meant he did not automatically trigger a one-year extension. Newcastle also passed up the option, instead entering talks over an incentive-based contract.

It is part of the reason why United first showed interest in David, however his wages coupled with the fact he’d be viewed as second choice to Isak were two major stumbling blocks.

Howe was keen to bring in Joao Pedro from Brighton & Hove Albion with the Brazilian able to play as a striker or out wide but lost out to Chelsea.

That said, Newcastle are set to bolster their attacking options in the coming days with the signing of Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga after tabling a £55million bid.
