Peter Niemeyer has backed Max Wober to be a major asset for Werder Bremen after the Leeds United defender joined the Bundesliga club on loan.
The Austrian international will spend the 2025/26 campaign with the German outfit, having fallen down in the pecking order for a starting berth at Elland Road. Wober has become Bremen's first summer signing and will wear shirt number 39. Should Wober impress, Bremen have the option to buy Wober on a permanent basis.
Niemeyer, the head of professional football at Bremen, said: "We're delighted that we were able to interest Maximilian in a move to Werder. In signing him, we've gained an internationally experienced defender, whose quality will provide our defence with more stability. After a difficult last season, he made a strong comeback recently on international duty. We believe he will continue that positive development here with us."
Head coach Horst Steffen has also expressed his delight over securing Wober's services. "I'm really pleased to now have another Austrian international in our team," he said.
"Maximilian is tactically very well trained. He can play as a centre-back or at left-back. He's a tough tackler and dominant in the air, and has good build-up play. On top of that, he already knows the Bundesliga from his time in Mönchengladbach, so settling in won't be an issue for him."
Wober is excited at the prospect of a new challenge. "I had some really good talks with the people in charge at Werder," he said. "I can fully identify with the path the club is taking and I'm looking forward to what lies ahead.
"Of course, I'm also particularly looking forward to joining up with my three national teammates at Werder – I'm sure they'll have a few tips for me."
