Marco Asensio could still reunite with Unai Emery at Aston Villa this summer.

Asensio followed Marcus Rashford in leaving the Villans after his loan spell with the West Midlands club came to an end last month, but there is still hope that he might re-sign on a favourable deal.

The Spaniard showed flashes of brilliance last season, including scoring a brace against Chelsea (22 February) to complete a comeback and win the game 2-1.

However, the levels of his performances were inconsistent, leaving Villa to assess his value with one year left on his contract at Paris Saint-Germain.

Fenerbahçe make an offer for Asensio

Villa will have to move quickly if they are to re-sign Asensio, as Fenerbahçe have already offered PSG £12.9million for the playmaker, as reported by L’Equipe (2 July).

The Turkish giants are looking to buy out the last year of the 29-year-old’s contract as former Premier League winner Jose Mourinho looks to strengthen his squad.

The Claret and Blues have been wary of spending before the start of the new financial year, but Emery will have to act fast if he is to intercept the deal.

Ex-Villa scout Bryan King – speaking exclusively to Villa News – believes Asensio would prefer to remain in the Premier League and would accept Villa’s offer to return should they reach an agreement with the French champions.

“Aston Villa should be his club,” King said.

“I’m sure he’d prefer a move to the Premier League; he’s just proven his quality in the Premier League. If they can pick a player up for that kind of money, although he’d probably cost a bit more, I’d say anywhere between £15-20m, then that’s a good deal.

“If Luis Enrique has told him he has no future, get yourself sorted and get back to Villa. I could see him accepting an offer from Villa. They’ve got European football next season as well. If he’s got a chance to sign for Villa, that’s the sensible thing to do.”

Asensio’s ship has sailed at Villa

Asensio’s initial move to Villa Park made sense for both parties – Emery needed to replace Jhon Duran’s goals at short notice while his compatriot was eager to get game time.

He was also brought in to lessen the burden on Ollie Watkins’ shoulders, but only managed four direct goal involvements in the Premier League before being an unused substitute in six of Villa’s last eight league games.

He ultimately failed to live up to his initial promise, and given that he would likely demand very high wages, Villa and Emery should consider that the ship has sailed.
