Mikel Arteta is desperate to bolster his squad, but in a surprising turn of events, the Gunners have lost a player who added good depth to the team and valuable experience. It was reported on Friday that Takehiro Tomiyasu’s contract had been mutually terminated, as the defender has been injured for over a season now.
Arsenal announced the news on their official website, with a statement. It read: “We have reached a mutual agreement with Takehiro Tomiyasu to end his contract with immediate effect.
“Unfortunately, injuries have limited Tomi’s time on the pitch in the past two seasons, with the defender making just one substitute appearance last season. It was therefore mutually agreed to end Tomi’s contract in order for him to start a new chapter in his career. Everyone at Arsenal Football Club would like to thank Tomi for his contribution to the club and we wish him and his family all the best for the future.”
Arsenal should sign Lindelof to replace Tomiyasu
Following the departure of the Japanese defender, Arsenal now need to replace him. Tomiyasu was an experienced and versatile Premier League defender, who was valuable for depth. There is a player out there who would be the ideal replacement.
Former Man United defender Victor Lindelof left the Red Devils as a free agent, following a spell of 10 years at Old Trafford. He has plenty of experience, and would be able to fill the shoes of Tomiyasu, seeing as he can play both as a centre-back or a full-back.
Seeing as he’s a free agent, it would be a savvy pick up for Arsenal, even if they added him for just one year, it would help bolster Arteta’s defensive options in case of injury to the likes of William Saliba and Gabriel.
