Major change made to transfer deal as Leeds United confirm depature

Leeds United started their summer transfer window trying to move on from some players in the first team. So far, only one player is set to leave the club.

Illan Meslier is one of the first names mentioned when summer exits are being discussed around Elland Road. The French keeper lost his place in the team last year, and is expected to be sold this summer. However, this was not the first time the 25-year old considered an exit.

Another first team star heavily linked with a move away has been Max Wober. The Austrian international revealed during the last international break that the Whites told him to find a new club.

It was reported this week that Wober was leaving Leeds United and joining Werder Bremen on a permanent deal worth around £5million. But on Friday, the Leeds United website reports that Wober is joining the Bundesliga side on a loan deal. Werder Bremen’s website adds that the loan deal has an option to buy.

But there is a reason why the terms of the transfer were changed.

Why the terms of Max Wober’s deal was changed

According to Joe Donnohue of the YEP, a loan deal is a better option than a permanent deal because of PSR. He posted on his X account:

”Understanding is that a loan move benefits #LUFC more from a PSR standpoint. Selling Wöber this summer at a price below ~£5m would see the club report a loss on their 2025/26 accounts, due to player amortisation costs.”

It is known around the club that Leeds will be working really hard to keep themselves within PSR this summer. It is part of the reason why some first team stars have been put up for sale.
