Michael Keane has signed a new contract with Everton.

The 32-year-old has penned a one-year agreement with the Blues just days after the expiration of his last deal.

The centre back will offer David Moyes cover in a key area after talks with his camp led to fresh terms being discussed during the close season.

Keane had interest from elsewhere and Everton explored the centre back market before discussions accelerated last month. There was an acceptance at Finch Farm that, should Keane depart, a replacement would be needed.

With that in mind, Moyes’ preference was to attempt to reach a deal with the former Burnley man in order to retain a figure that he trusted as a squad player.

Keane will act as back-up to Jarrad Branthwaite and James Tarkowski, with Jake O’Brien also developing into a strong option at centre back after breaking into the first team, initially as a right back, following Moyes’ return.

Yet while others may sit before him in the pecking order, Keane signs off the back of a season in which injuries led to him starting and ending the campaign in the team. His performances when called upon in the final games of the season, as well as his professionalism behind the scenes, impressed Moyes as Keane scored in the win at Fulham and played a pivotal role in the final day victory at Newcastle United.

As well as at Craven Cottage, he chipped in with goals against Bournemouth and Ipswich Town.

Upon confirmation of the deal, Keane said: “I love Everton and have been massively proud to play for this club since the day I joined so I’m delighted to extend my stay here. The manager wants a competitive squad and I still feel I have a lot to give to Everton.

“We’ve been through a difficult few years but it’s an exciting time ahead for us as players and our brilliant fans. We’ve got a world-class new stadium to play in, and our form under the manager last season shows there’s a lot of reasons to be positive. I’m looking forward to being part of it.”

Keane joined the club from Turf Moor in 2017, meaning the extension will take him into a ninth season with Everton.

Welcoming the agreement, Moyes said: “We are pleased Michael has agreed to stay with us. His performances at Fulham and Newcastle at the end of last season showed the value he can bring to our squad.

"We will need his experience and professionalism as we go forward."
