Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos have ‘decision to make’ over Real Madrid’s swoop for ex-Man Utd talent, two options on table

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos could secure important transfer funds if Real Madrid complete their stunning swoop for one emerging former Manchester United talent.

Ineos and Sir Jim Ratcliffe have already sent out warnings over Manchester United’s financial difficulties after they took control of football operations at Old Trafford.

The Ineos reign has already seen several cost-cutting measures take place under United co-owner Ratcliffe, including around 250 redundancies being made in 2024.

However, Ratcliffe has defended his position over making the tough calls at the Red Devils amid his desire to see the club return back to the top of English football.

The 72-year-old British billionaire has faced criticism during Ineos’ management of football operations at United and the Red Devils’ spending power is limited.

United will need to offload first-team Red Devils players and free up wages amid keeping in line with the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos are seeing Real Madrid pick up their transfer interest in former Man Utd talent Alvaro Carreras

Alvaro Carreras came through the Manchester United youth academy and the Spanish-born left-back struggled to establish himself in the first team at the club.

The 22-year-old former United defender did not make a single senior appearance for the Red Devils before he was loaned out to Benfica in the 2024 January window.

Alvaro Carreras’ loan deal included an optional buy clause for Benfica, with the Primeira Liga side exercising the option and signing him for a €6m transfer fee.

The aforementioned clause would become an obligation to buy if Carreras started half of the matches during his loan spell and the final deal included €3m in add-ons.

Carreras has now been linked with Real Madrid after impressing during his time with Benfica and Los Blancos are reportedly poised to make a move for him this summer.

Real Madrid’s transfer fee for Benfica defender Alvaro Carreras is something that Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos could benefit from

Alvaro Carreras is under contract with Benfica until 2029 and the former United academy product has been representing his current side at the Club World Cup.

It is believed that the Galicia international is keen to leave Benfica and Real Madrid were tipped to sign Carreras for £42m by activating his release clause.

According to NationalWorld, Madrid have ‘tabled’ a £43m (€50m) offer for the Benfica talent and United now have a ‘dilemma’ that they face over the transfer.

United included a 20 per cent sell-on clause in their initial deal for Carreras and could earn £8.6m (€10m) ‘for doing nothing’ by allowing Madrid to sign the player.

However, NationalWorld also pointed out that United have the ‘other option’ of triggering their £15m buyback clause and then flipping Carreras for a profit.

The publication suggested that the ‘ball is in United’s court’ over what to do next, but Ineos ‘have a decision to make’ amid Madrid’s looming interest in Carreras.
