Wolverhampton Wanderers could have found the perfect alternative to Harvey Elliott

Harvey Elliott has been a name on everyone’s lips in the past week. The Liverpool man has been linked with an exit for months after struggling for first-team football under Arne Slot, but his profile has now gone through the roof.

That is thanks to his performances for England’s U21 side, who won the European Championship for a second consecutive time with Elliott at the heart of everything. The 22-year-old won Player of the Tournament after his five goals inspired the Young Lions to victories over Spain, the Netherlands and Germany in the knock-out stages.

All of a sudden, a want-away star in need of getting his career back on track has become one of the most in-demand midfielders in the Premier League. Previous links with Brighton & Hove Albion, Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Wolverhampton Wanderers have now been added to by the likes of RB Leipzig in Germany, and further interest is likely to become clear in the coming days.

The Athletic have suggested that Elliott would want to operate at an “an elite - possibly Champions League - level”, something he has more scope to demand after his recent U21 exploits. This may force Wolves to look elsewhere, with one potential target offering an ideal alternative.

Fulham playmaker Andreas Pereira could be Wolves answer

Wolves may not need to look far for the answer to their dilemma, with Fulham playmaker Andreas Pereira a potential option. The Cottagers are reportedly bracing for interest in the Brazilian this summer from the likes of Nottingham Forest and Marseille, and may part ways with the 29-year-old former Manchester United man for around £30m.

Pereira is reportedly admired by his namesake Vitor at Wanderers, who will hope to be able to convince the 10-cap Brazil international of a move to the West Midlands with the promise of a starring role in replacing fellow countryman Matheus Cunha. Pereira would also have few issues settling in at Molineux, with the club’s strong contingent of native Portuguese speakers which include Brazil international teammates Joao Gomes and Andre.

What Matheus Pereira would bring to Wolves

Since his arrival at Craven Cottage, Pereira has demonstrated his creative qualities and shown why he deserves to be a starter in the Premier League. Registering 10 goals and 22 assists in three seasons at the club, Pereira has been one of Fulham’s most consistent performers - but his importance to the side began to decrease last campaign.

After 34 Premier League starts in 2023/24, that figure decreased to just 25 last year. A versatile creative midfielder capable of playing across a variety of positions, Pereira may look to move on this summer and Molineux could be his destination.

Though the Old Gold might have to compete for his signature with sides who can offer European football, they must put their full focus on Pereira as a priority signing and hope that it enough to encourage him to make the switch to Molineux. With Cunha and Rayan Ait-Nouri gone and a glaring hole left in the club’s creative department as a result, Pereira could be a game-changing signing if they can make it happen.
