Ex-NFL general manager makes bold take about Steelers’ rookie QB: ‘He will be starting’

Pittsburgh Steelers rookie quarterback Will Howard has garnered far more hype than the usual sixth-round quarterback. After leading Ohio State to the National Championship, Howard then landed with the Steelers in the sixth round.

Aaron Rodgers has begun mentoring Howard, but former NFL general manager Mike Tannenbaum believes Howard will start for the Steelers at some point this season.

“Will Howard will be starting for the Pittsburgh Steelers by December 1,” he said on ‘Get Up’. “Will Howard led Ohio State to the national championship, 89 QBR, 35 touchdown passes. And if he was a little bit better in the offseason before the draft, he could have been a third or a fourth round pick.”

During rookie minicamp, Howard got off to a fast start, impressing Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin with his ability to command a huddle.

“He’s doing great,” Tomlin said. “But again, we’re at the very beginning of it. I don’t know that we’re looking at it through that lens in terms of evaluating him. It’s more about getting to know him.”

Howard transferred into Columbus from Kansas State, where he was a multiple-year starter and team captain. During his season, the Buckeyes were an up-and-down offense, but became an elite unit once Howard’s play took a significant leap in the College Football Playoff.

This season, Howard threw for 4010 passing yards, a career-high. With that, he posted a 73 percent completion percentage, another career-high mark. Howard had 35 touchdowns to 10 interceptions.
