Barcelona are back on the market for a new left winger after the shocking news that Nico Williams has agreed to a 10-year contract extension with Athletic Bilbao, leaving the Blaugrana stunned, angry and still needing to sign an attacker to fill a clear void in the squad.
According to a new report from Mundo Deportivo, the Catalans will turn to the other two main targets on their original list: Liverpool’s Luis Díaz and Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford. Díaz is Barça’s Plan A and has been the favorite target of sporting director Deco since the beginning, while Rashford is a low-cost alternative who has been desperate for a move to Barça since the start of 2025.
Liverpool have made it clear they have no intention of selling Díaz and gave a firm rejection to Bayern Munich in recent days, and despite the player’s desire to join Barça the negotiations will be very difficult and the price is expected to be very high if the Reds ever agreed to sell.
Rashford is the next option, and his signing could be easier given the desire from both the player and Manchester United to part ways, but a clear point of contention in negotiations would be United’s intention to secure a permanent sale while Barça currently plan to sign Rashford on loan with an option to buy.
The Catalans have a lot of work to do in the next week to secure a new left winger before the start of preseason, which is Hansi Flick’s main goal. The Blaugrana must move on quickly from the Nico Williams disappointment, and they already know their targets. Now they’ve got to get a deal done.
