Manchester United have been preparing for a significant summer rebuild after narrowly missing out on Champions League qualification, following a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final.

The result added pressure to reshape the squad, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe keen to inject fresh quality and balance into the side.

Matheus Cunha’s arrival from Wolves has already kicked off the summer business.

While Bryan Mbeumo is expected to follow, giving United’s frontline a much-needed boost.

However, in order to comply with financial regulations and sustain investment in new talent, several outgoings are also expected across the board.

Not just huge for the men’s team, but also the women’s team too.

Manchester United Women’s side are undergoing their own reshaping process.

There is also a clear focus on developing youth and building a more competitive squad ahead of the 2025/26 season.

The club’s long-term vision includes greater integration of Academy talent.

But experience still has a major role to play.

Rachel Williams has officially signed a contract extension with Manchester United Women until 2026, as confirmed by the club’s official website.

Williams, who joined the Reds in July 2022, has made 79 appearances and scored 21 goals for the club.

Including a vital strike against Chelsea that helped United reach the 2023/24 Adobe Women’s FA Cup final, which they went on to win.

Renowned for her “super-sub” impact, Williams came off the bench to produce key moments throughout last season, including a memorable brace against West Brom.

Speaking on the new deal, Williams said: “I am delighted to be continuing at Manchester United.

“The growth we have seen over the last few years has been great to be a part of.

“I look forward to lending my experience to this exciting squad and continuing to play my part in the squad.”

Director of women’s football Matt Johnson added: “We have a young, exciting squad which needs to be balanced with experience and leadership.

“Rachel makes a significant impact, on and off the pitch, and embodies the squad’s togetherness and hard-working spirit.”

The contract extension is a further sign of United’s commitment to maintaining a balanced squad across both the men’s and women’s teams.

Hence Keira Barry also recently having her contract extension triggered to remain at the club.
