Australian Football League star Jesse Moltop has paid a classy tribute to Diogo Jota after the striker’s tragic death.
The striker and his younger brother died in a car crash after their vehicle caught on fire.
Jota’s death in a car accident on Thursday shocked world sport, leading to an outpouring of grief for a popular goalscorer and father of three who had just celebrated his wedding.
In the early hours of Friday, the bodies of the former Liverpool forward and his brother André Silva returned to their hometown of Gondomar, ushering in what is sure to be one of the most sorrowful weekends in the history of Portuguese football.
A joint wake for the brothers is being held this Friday afternoon at Igreja Matriz de Gondomar near their hometown.
Thousands of fans also laid flowers and scarves outside Anfield, with many of his peers describing Jota as a “true family man”.
There has also been lots of tributes and condolence messages sent in honour of Jota.
Carlton Football Club star Jesse Moltop has also joined in sending a tribute to Jota.
The former Liverpool star was a handy gamer, and after he scored the winning goal in the 94th minute against Tottenham in a 4-3 thriller back in 2023, he sat cross-legged and mimicked playing a video game.
And that’s precisely what the 21-year-old Motlop did after he kicked a goal for Carlton Football Club.
The commentators initially had no idea what Motlop was up to, and it wasn’t until a replay later in the Fox Footy broadcast that they were informed of its meaning.
“Those who know these things better than us are telling us the Motlop celebration is in tribute to Diogo Jota, the Liverpool player who lost his life in a car accident yesterday,” Fox commentator Gerard Whateley said.
“That was one of his trademark celebrations.”
Meanwhile, the BBC have reported that the FA will seek guidance from Liverpool FC over plans for a potential tribute during this year’s FA Community Shield.
Discussions will be held about how best to honor the Liverpool icon during the traditional season curtain-raiser, scheduled for August 10 at Wembley Stadium.
This is yet another way the footballing world is coming together for the Diogo Jota tragedy, with the UEFA Women’s European Championship clash between Spain and Portugal seeing a minute of silence observed before kick-off on Thursday evening.
