Man United are hoping to land Brentford attacker Bryan Mbeumo this summer after two bid rejections.
Manchester United have already begun bolstering Ruben Amorim’s attack with the signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves for a fee of £62.5m. They are also looking to sign a number nine to improve their goal-scoring outlook for next year.
Mbeumo scored 20 goals in the Premier League for the Bees last season, and so if they are to sell him, Brentford will need to make sure they find an apt replacement for the 25-year-old, and it seems that they have.
Brentford sign potential Mbeumo replacement
In what is a huge boost for Manchester United, Brentford have signed an attacker who can potentially replace Mbeumo. That indicates that the Bees have all but accepted the fact that they are ready to sell the winger, with Man United the front-runners to sign him.
A club statement confirmed: “Brentford have completed the signing of Antoni Milambo from Eredivisie club Feyenoord, subject to international clearance.
“The 20-year-old midfielder has put pen to paper on a five-year contract with a club option of an additional year.”
Milambo was excellent for Feyenoord last year, scoring seven goals, and providing nine assists in 43 games for the Dutch side. He plays mainly as an attacking midfielder, but can also play on the left wing, making him a fair replacement for Mbeumo.
With the Bees spending around £21m to bring the 20-year-old in, he could be their long-term replacement for the winger, handing United somewhat of a ‘green light’ to place a third bid for Mbeumo, and try to land the Cameroon international.
Brentford’s technical director Lee Dykes told the club’s official website: “We believe that Antoni has all the attributes needed to be a very good Premier League player. Antoni is a skilful, forward-thinking midfield player capable of scoring all types of goals, as proven through his youth development phase.”
Based on the fact that he is described as a ‘forward-thinking’ player who can score ‘all types of goals’, it does seem reminiscent of what Mbeumo is known for, making it look as though Milambo is the replacement.
Man United could get £6m Mbeumo fee boost
Seeing as Man United’s last bid for Mbeumo was still deemed short by Brentford, the Red Devils need to generate the extra cash to land him. It could come in the form of a sell-on clause.
The extra funds could help United make a bid that Brentford deem enough to see Mbeumo come to Old Trafford this summer, a move which could be crucial to United’s success under Amorim next season.
