Pittsburgh Steelers rookie offensive lineman Gareth Warren has been added to the exclusive negotiation list for the Edmonton Elks of the CFL.
While that does not affect Warren’s status with the Steelers, it means that if Warren were to get cut by the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Elks would have the exclusive negotiating rights to sign Warren if he could not find another NFL team.
Generally, CFL teams have 40 to 45 players on their exclusive negotiating lists. Warren is the lone current Steelers player on any list, though many former Steelers are scattered across the league and on those lists.
The Lindenwood product found his way to Pittsburgh after his agent called to say they were interested and wanted to sign him. Warren, in an interview on ‘Steelers Afternoon Drive’ explains how that all came about.
“My agent called me up after the draft, and usually, you get signed in that time, but he told me some teams were interested in me, and so, I got the invite from the Steelers,” Warren said. “And I wanted to take it and do my best. I went into the week and was like, ‘Just play your game, learn fast, and it’s going to mentally and physically exhaust, but this what you worked for and dreamed for.’
Warren is 328 pounds while running a 5.22 40-yard dash with a 1.81 10-yard split. Warren has 33 5/8-inch arms, giving him enough length to stay at offensive tackle if that is what the Steelers view him as heading into the offseason.
