Confirmed: Michael Keane signs new Everton contract

In a summer where the Everton squad is expected to be wracked with change, any consistency could be a positive. The number of players who could leave with expiring contracts and loans ending is expected to be in the double figures, but the Toffees are taking steps to ensure there is at least some continuity at Finch Farm.

Michael Keane has now signed a new contract that will keep him at the club for another one year. Signed by the Blues in the summer of 2017 from Burnley for £25 million, he has featured in 230 games. The 32-year-old has lost his starting spot for the Toffees in recent years, featuring as a backup over the last few seasons, but has also scored some key goals in his tally of 16, not least being the first goal in the comeback 3-2 win against Crystal Palace that secured relegation survival under Frank Lampard three seasons ago.

The centre half was previously one of the highest paid players on the Toffees, and was expected to leave with multiple offers from Championship and MLS sides reportedly on the table.

However, his experience and familiarity with the squad, as well as his willingness to take a pay cut meant the new regime at Everton decided to keep him on, albeit in a backup, fourth choice role.

Jarrad Branthwaite cemented his starting spot with a new contract a few days ago. Iron man James Tarkowski has been first choice centre back next to him for the last couple of seasons, but missed the first few games of his Toffees tenure right at the end of the season with a hamstring tear. Last summer signing Jake O'Brien is one for the future, though David Moyes has tried to get him onto the pitch earlier by deploying him at right back.

Speaking after signing his new contract, Keane said -

“I love Everton and have been massively proud to play for this club since the day I joined so I’m delighted to extend my stay here.

“The manager wants a competitive squad and I still feel I have a lot to give to Everton.

“We’ve been through a difficult few years but it’s an exciting time ahead for us as players and our brilliant fans.

“We’ve got a world-class new stadium to play in, and our form under the manager last season shows there’s a lot of reasons to be positive. I’m looking forward to being part of it.”

Manager David Moyes added -

“We are pleased Michael has agreed to stay with us. His performances at Fulham and Newcastle at the end of last season showed the value he can bring to our squad. We will need his experience and professionalism as we go forward."
