Leeds United must join PL race to sign 'unbelievable' goalkeeper after Djordje Petrovic blow - opinion

The search for a new goalkeeper rumbles on for Leeds United, who’ve just seen one of their reported targets agree a move to Premier League rivals Sunderland, as so many have in the last week.

Sunderland have agreed a deal to sign Djordje Petrovic from Chelsea, reports have claimed, and he becomes the fourth player in a week to have either signed for Sunderland, or to have agreed a move to the club, who was also strongly linked with a move to Leeds United.

It’s alarming for Daniel Farke, especially given the fact that he desperately needs a new no.1, and one that can hack the Premier League with Illan Meslier set to leave the club this summer, and no new goalkeeper seemingly close to coming in and replacing him.

There have been several goalkeepers linked with a move to Leeds United this summer: Aaron Ramsdale, Noel Tornqvist, and Sam Johnstone to name a few, though more and more are joining other clubs, like Petrovic and Caoimhin Kelleher who’s already joined Brentford this summer.

Leeds United should join the race to sign Mads Hermansen

Another goalkeeper who looks set to be on the move this summer is Leicester City’s Mads Hermansen. The Dane earned praise last season despite the Foxes’ woeful Premier League campaign, and now he has a growing number of potential options to leave the King Power during this summer’s transfer window.

West Ham are making an effort to sign the 24-year-old. So too are Chelsea. Leicester City signed Hermansen in a £6million deal in 2023 but reports throughout this year have claimed that the Foxes are now looking for £25million to sell the former Brondby man, who former Leicester boss Ruud van Nistelrooy described as ‘unbelievable’.

For Leeds, it could be a smart move: bringing in a goalkeeper who’s just impressed in the Premier League, and investing in someone who could be their no.1 for some years to come.

Three reasons why Leeds United should move for Mads Hermansen

Signing him would be a long-term investment

At 24 years old, Hermansen remains very young for a goalkeeper. But he’s now got a solid season of Premier League experience under his belt, and he more than held his own, showcasing some great potential for the future.

For Leeds, even if he cost up to £25million, it still falls well within Leeds United’s reported £150million transfer budget, and signing him would surely see Farke have a solid no.1 for some years to come.

Or if Hermansen impresses, he could quickly become a very valuable and sellable asset for the 49ers, who could make a huge profit on the Leicester man.

He’s more reliable than Aaron Ramsdale

Ramsdale seems like a key target for Leeds. As time goes on and other targets are snapped up, his name remains in headlines. And Ramsdale is tipped to leave Southampton this summer, potentially even on loan, so a move to Elland Road remains a possibility.

But many Leeds fans might have reservations about the former Arsenal man. Not only does he now have three Premier League relegations to his name, but he’s not exactly error-proof having certainly made some howlers in his time: Ramsdale even admitted that he finds it hard to focus during games sometimes. Hermansen seems a much steadier pair of hands.

Leeds United can capitalise on Leicester City uncertainty

Whilst Leeds United were promoted to the Premier League, Leicester City were relegated from it. The Foxes now don’t have a manager and the club generally seems to be in a mess, which could easily play into the hands of Leeds United.

Whether this £25million price tag remains after the club’s relegation remains to be seen, if not unlikely. But Leeds could offer the Foxes a bit of financial respite by coming in with a solid offer for Hermansen, who’d surely be keen on remaining in the Premier League and getting out of the chaos that is Leicester City this summer.
