Fabrizio Romano shares worrying update on Arsenal talks to extend Ethan Nwaneri’s contract

Arsenal starlet Ethan Nwaneri wants playing time guarantees before committing his future to a long-term contract at the club, journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed.

The Gunners remain keen on extending another of their promising English teenagers’ contracts, having successfully done so with defender Myles Lewis-Skelly last month.

However, while active talks are ongoing with Nwaneri’s representatives and the player is keen on staying, he first wants to understand Arsenal’s plans for the upcoming seasons, including regarding his game time.

The Gunners are believed to be in the market for a new wide forward this summer, with Premier League stars Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze being targeted.

Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel, has revealed that conversations remain ‘active and positive’ between Arsenal and Nwaneri’s camp over his new contract at the Emirates:

“Let's also follow in the next days the topic of the new contract for Ethan Nwaneri, because Arsenal are in active talks with the agents of Ethan Nwaneri, the player is really still keen on staying at Arsenal.

“So after Lewis-Skelly, Arsenal always wanted to extend the contract of Ethan Nwaneri, there is a discussion to do on game time.

“Because, obviously, Eberechi Eze, Noni Madueke, Arsenal are working on several profiles, and so obviously on player camp, they want to understand what's Arsenal’s plan for the boy for the upcoming seasons before putting pen to paper.

“So the conversation remains active and positive, with Ethan Nwaneri keen on staying at Arsenal, but also seeking for some guarantees in terms of game time, in terms of plan before putting pen to paper.”

Nwaneri, who made his Arsenal debut back in the 2022/23 season, enjoyed a breakout campaign last term, making 37 appearances, scoring nine goals and providing two assists.

The 18-year-old made 16 starts across all competitions, including 11 in the Premier League, where he netted four times in close to 900 minutes on the field.

Arsenal’s summer business has picked up pace in recent days, with Kepa Arrizabalaga announced as the first signing, and Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard deals close to completion.

The Gunners also remain in talks for Valencia defender Cristhian Mosquera’s arrival after seeing their initial bid rejected.
