Petition Started To Ban Daily Mail Coverage Following Reporting On Jota

We Liverpool supporters are still reeling from the unimaginable tragedy of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva’s untimely deaths.

Behind the scenes here at TLO towers, we’ve all been trying to grapple with the best ways to cover the devastating news in a way that is respectful and appropriate. We’re just a few Liverpool fans, paid peanuts, to do the best we can on our little backwater corner of the internet, but we still care deeply about the quality of reporting and commentary that we are responsible for putting out into the world.

_The Daily Mail_, on the other hand, is one of the biggest tabloids in the UK. And as right-wing tabloids are wont to do, they decided to throw journalistic and ethical standards out the window, and publish photos of Jota’s car wreck, and of his grieving wife outside of the mortuary.

I will not be linking to the article, and I suggest our readers do not seek it out and give them the clicks they so desperately crave.

Fans, rightfully, find this incredibly disgusting and distasteful. At least one fan, rightfully, thought this was distasteful enough to ban _Daily Mail_ reporters from covering football for Liverpool and Wolves, and [started a petition on change.org.](https://www.change.org/p/ban-the-daily-mail-from-liverpool-and-molineux) As of this writing, the petition has received over 10,000 verified signatures in under 24 hours.

This is sadly not Liverpool’s first run-in with disgusting right-wing tabloid coverage following a tragedy; _The Sun_ has been boycotted across Merseyside since their horrific and maliciously false coverage of the Hillsborough Disaster in 1989.

Considering _The Daily Mail_’s political leanings (bad) and their coverage of Jota’s death (worse), banning their reporters from covering Liverpool and Wolverhampton would be a good first step.
